Normally, I’m not that attached to my stuff, so I don’t bling it all up.
But FPV is life.
So when I was offered by HotDog FPV(YouTube) to try some custom FPV goggle straps, I was intrigued.
Before I get into the blinginess(and usefulness) of the straps, I’d like to give a shoutout to some stellar customer service by Hot Dog FPV.
When I was first approached, the team sent me one strap through regular air mail. Unfortunately, India Post is sometimes notorious for delivering packages 6 months late(most of my stuff is on time, but some things just get swallowed by the system it seems).
This was back in November.
One month later, I emailed informing that I hadn’t received the straps, and it must be due to some logistical issues from the post office.
So they doubled down on their generosity and sent another strap!
India Post has swallowed this one, too.
It’s late February as I write this, and the two straps are somewhere in the postal warehouses since the past 4 months. Sheesh.
My parents had gone for a short trip to the USA, so I bought a strap and had it shipped to them – it was the least I could do considering their generosity and the fact that I owe them a review.
It finally came, and here’s what I think.
Design and comfort
The strap Stephanie(from Hot Dog FPV) suggested to me was a 2 inch strap. This is double the size of the normal 1 inch strap that Fat Shark ships with.
The design is really neat!
In order to get the strap to still work with the little slots on the goggles, there is a small one inch tall loop on either end of the strap which is a neutral color – no print on it. The loop fits over and slips into the slots.
There is a buckle that you can move to adjust the length of the strap, and on the other end, there is a little extra strap sbatewn onto the outside where you would fit your battery.
The battery strap is quite ingenious since it now sits on the outside of the strap rather than in between, so you don’t feel the battery as much as you would on the stock strap.
The material of the strap is really springy.
At first, I thought this would be a bit of a detriment, since it also made the strap feel a bit rough on the outside, but then I put the goggles on…
Fit and comfort
I over-tightened the strap on the first go, but when I got the fit right, MAN!
The goggles have never felt so snug.
They felt so snug that the screen actually looked bigger!
I don’t even know how that’s possible.
But this strap got the fit so good that there was NO light leak whatsoever, and the larger two inch tall strap did really do a better job of holding the goggles to my face.
I’ve only just started using these straps so I can’t really say much about the durability yet, but I will certainly post an update in a couple of months.
Designs
Hot Dog FPV has a whole bunch of different designs available – and you can even use a custom design if you wish. It’s a really neat way to personalize your goggles.
Heck, you could even put a message like “Please wait until I land” :p
I ordered the “Galaxy” one since astronomy is another one of my hobbies.
One of their most popular(and doubly useful) straps is the FPV frequency one, which is a table of FPV frequencies printed onto the strap.
Next time you’re at a race and someone wants to know what channel/band a particular frequency is on, you can just point to your head!
They keep updating their designs and coming out with new ones so you’ll probably see some new cool stuff every so often that you visit their site.
Conclusion and value for money
Honestly, after using this strap, I do feel that the Fat Shark stock strap sucks. But for as long as I was using the stock strap(2 years), I didn’t really know that there could be something better.
Do you ABSOLUTELY need this upgrade? Maybe not.
Will this make your goggles better? Yes.
Is it a SUPER cool thing to have, and a way you can really personalize your goggles? Absolutely.
A lot of folks like to hydro dip or paint their gear to personalize it – and these straps are a really cool way of doing so.
In fact, I’m also considering placing an order for a “FPV Frenzy” personalized strap from them some time in the future.
If you’re looking to really personalize your goggles(and get a better fit on your face while you’re at it), definitely consider picking up a strap from Hot Dog FPV.
